Call for Papers: 2024 SSA’s Annual Conference – Deadline Extended to January 17th!

2024 ANNUAL CONFERENCE | CALL FOR PAPERS

 McGill University, Montréal — June 12-14, 2024

CFP Deadline Extended to January 17th!

The Sexuality Studies Association (SSA) welcomes proposals for our 12th annual meeting to be held in person at McGill University in Montréal from June 12-14, 2024. The conference will be hosted in coordination with the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences and will feature a variety of programming including paper presentations, a keynote presentation by Dr. Bobby Benedicto, and a plenary panel organized by Dr. Ummni Khan (the SSA’s 2023 recipient of the Academic Leadership in Sexuality Studies Award), in addition to our Annual General Meeting.

The official theme for Congress 2024 is “Sustaining shared futures.” Climate change has stirred an increasing “critical sense of urgency” around the globe, and The Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences invites scholarship this year that faces this “multi-faceted challenge of a lifetime” head on. The Congress 2024 theme links sustainability praxis to interdependency and “concerted action across disciplines”. The Federation has called upon Congress participants to illuminate the “unequal impact” of the planet’s warming by “enmeshing the knowledges of diverse contexts” and “amplifying Black and Indigenous perspectives” in particular. The SSA aims to contribute to these commitments by inviting submissions that think deeply about what’s needed to sustain this planet as well as what’s needed to sustain Sexuality Studies as a worthwhile critical knowledge project. The necessary equitable re-imaginings that the realities of our current world – including the rise of white supremacy, fascism, and the climate crisis – demand of us are applicable to the workings of the academy as well. Therefore, we call for Sexuality Studies scholarship that critically and creatively theorizes what is needed to hold the institutions we work in – as well as each other – to account, within antiracist and decolonial commitments.

The SSA Programming Committee invites submissions that respond to the official Congress 2024 theme of sustainability and cooperation or to any topic within the field of Sexuality Studies. We welcome proposals for presentations in English or French from any disciplinary, interdisciplinary, or transdisciplinary approach. Paper proposals in the form of 300–word abstracts, or panel proposals (see submission form for panel proposal guidelines) can be submitted HERE. The deadline for submission is January 17, 2024. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance by March 15, 2024.

Applicants are not required to be members of the association at time of submission. If selected for presentation as part of the conference, 2023-2024 membership dues must be paid along with Congress and SSA conference fees. To become a member of the SSA you can register through our website here. Congress and conference registration opens in January.

At this time, the SSA is also inviting nominations for our two annual awards. To be considered for the SSA’s Emerging Scholar Award please review the eligibility guidelines available on our website. Applicants will need to indicate their interest on the proposal submission form and must provide a full-length conference paper to the Awards Committee by April 30, 2024. To nominate someone for SSA’s Academic Leadership in Sexuality Studies Award, please review the eligibility guidelines available on our website and send your submissions to the Awards Committee (sexualitystudiesassociation@gmail.com) by March 31, 2024.

If you have any questions or are interested in joining the Programming Committee, please contact our Program Coordinator, Dr. Gary Lee Pelletier at garylee.pelletier@utoronto.ca.
